TranslucentTB on Windows 11: what works on 24H2 and 25H2

TranslucentTB 2026.2 supports the Windows 11 taskbar on every release from 21H2 to 25H2. On 22H2 and later it works by loading a small helper into Explorer, which is why big Windows updates and Insider builds are the most common reason it breaks.

Short answer

Does TranslucentTB work on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2?

Yes. Version 2026.2 (released August 31, 2026) handles the XAML taskbar that 22H2, 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2 use, including blur with an adjustable radius. Install it from the Microsoft Store or with winget install CharlesMilette.TranslucentTB. If it stops working after an update, restart Windows once, update TranslucentTB, then see troubleshooting.

How TranslucentTB changes the Windows 11 taskbar

TranslucentTB doesn't look at your build number to pick a method. Each time Explorer starts, it inspects the taskbar window: whether it belongs to the Windows 11 taskbar component, and how many XAML islands it contains. That gives three cases:

How TranslucentTB 2026.2 decides which method to use on Windows 11 When Explorer starts, TranslucentTB checks whether the taskbar window belongs to the Windows 11 taskbar DLL and counts its XAML islands. No taskbar DLL means a classic taskbar, such as Windows 10 or ExplorerPatcher, handled with SetWindowCompositionAttribute. Two islands means the mixed taskbar of 21H2 and early 22H2, also handled with SetWindowCompositionAttribute, with blur only on 22000.282 and later. One island means the XAML taskbar of 22H2 and later, handled by loading ExplorerTAP into Explorer. • XAML taskbar (22H2 and later). The taskbar is drawn with XAML, so the old window-composition trick no longer applies. TranslucentTB loads ExplorerTAP.dll into Explorer through XAML Diagnostics and replaces the taskbar's background brush with a solid color, an acrylic brush or its own blur brush. This is the step that can fail with "Failed to initialize XAML Diagnostics".
  • Mixed taskbar (21H2, early 22H2). A classic window with XAML content inside. TranslucentTB uses SetWindowCompositionAttribute, the same accent API as on Windows 10.
  • Classic taskbar. If ExplorerPatcher brings back the Windows 10 taskbar, TranslucentTB treats it like Windows 10.

When TranslucentTB exits or crashes, the helper restores the default taskbar look. Full details: How it works.

The five looks on Windows 11

Every look is available on the 22H2+ XAML taskbar. These previews use the same rules as the app; real rendering depends on your wallpaper and Windows theme.

Blur strength. On the XAML taskbar, blur is a Gaussian blur with a standard deviation of blur_radius ÷ 3. The default 9 is a light 3-pixel blur; values up to 750 are accepted. Set it in settings.json or with the settings builder. More: Appearance modes.

The thin line on top of the taskbar

Windows 11 draws a 1-pixel border on top of the taskbar. TranslucentTB can hide it per state with show_line (tray menu: Show taskbar border). By default it is hidden on the desktop and with a normal window open, and shown when a window is maximized and while Start, Search or Task View is open. On the XAML taskbar the helper toggles the border element; on the mixed taskbar it clips the top pixel. show_peek, the Show Desktop button option, only applies to classic taskbars.

Windows settings that change what you see

Windows settingEffect with TranslucentTB
Personalization › Colors › Show accent color on Start and taskbarChanges the normal look and can tint what you see. Turn it off if your TranslucentTB color looks wrong.
Personalization › Colors › Transparency effectsControls Windows' own translucency (the normal look). Microsoft's acrylic material falls back to a solid color when this is off or energy saver is on, so if TranslucentTB's acrylic looks flat, check it.
Personalization › Colors › Light / Dark modeChanges normal and the color of taskbar icons and text. A clear taskbar on a light wallpaper may need dark mode for readable icons.
Taskbar › Taskbar alignment (center/left)No effect. TranslucentTB only changes the background.
Taskbar › Automatically hide the taskbarWorks; the look applies whenever the taskbar is visible.
Taskbar › Other system tray iconsTurn on TranslucentTB here to keep its icon out of the overflow.

Can Windows 11 make the taskbar transparent without an app?

Not fully. Windows 11's only built-in option is Settings › Personalization › Colors › Transparency effects, which gives the taskbar Windows' own slightly see-through material. There is no setting for a clear, colored or adjustable-blur taskbar, and no supported registry value we can confirm for 24H2 or 25H2. That gap is exactly what TranslucentTB fills.

Using ExplorerPatcher's classic taskbar

TranslucentTB supports ExplorerPatcher (its README says so, and a 2024 commit added proper handling for tools that bring back the classic taskbar). With the classic taskbar, TranslucentTB switches to the Windows 10 method. Two differences on 22H2 and later: blur isn't available, because Windows removed the blur attribute (saved blur settings become acrylic), and show_peek works again because the Show Desktop button is the classic one.

Known Windows 11 issues

FAQ

Is TranslucentTB compatible with Windows 11 25H2?

Yes. 25H2 uses the same XAML taskbar as 24H2, which TranslucentTB 2026.2 supports. Some users have reported XAML Diagnostics errors and secondary-monitor problems on 25H2; see the troubleshooting page.

Why is Blur missing on my Windows 11 PC?

The menu hides Blur on taskbars that can't do it: Windows 11 21H2 before 22000.282, early 22H2 builds with the mixed taskbar, and ExplorerPatcher's classic taskbar on 22H2 and later. On the normal 22H2+ taskbar, Blur is there in version 2024.3 and later.

Does TranslucentTB slow down Windows 11?

The README describes it as using a few MB of RAM and almost no CPU. It reacts to window events rather than polling, and the taskbar effects are drawn by Windows' own compositor.

Does TranslucentTB work on Windows 11 on ARM?

Yes. The Store package and the portable zip both include native ARM64 builds.

Can TranslucentTB center the taskbar icons?

No, it only changes the taskbar background. Windows 11 centers icons itself: Settings › Personalization › Taskbar › Taskbar behaviors › Taskbar alignment (Center or Left). TranslucentTB works with either alignment.

Can TranslucentTB make the Start menu transparent?

No. It changes only the taskbar. The Start menu's look comes from Windows; its translucency follows Transparency effects in Settings › Personalization › Colors. TranslucentTB can change the taskbar while Start is open, with the Start opened state.

Is a transparent taskbar good for an OLED screen?

A clear taskbar removes the solid bar, but the icons, clock and system tray stay on screen in the same place, so it does not stop those from being static. If burn-in is your concern, Windows' own Automatically hide the taskbar option (Settings › Personalization › Taskbar › Taskbar behaviors) hides everything when you are not using it, and it works together with TranslucentTB.
