Windhawk vs TranslucentTB
Pick TranslucentTB if you want a transparent taskbar that changes by itself when windows open, maximize or Start opens. Pick Windhawk with the Windows 11 Taskbar Styler mod if you want to restyle the whole taskbar: corners, spacing, icons, the clock and the background. Don't let both style the taskbar background at once.

Short answer
Windhawk or TranslucentTB for a translucent taskbar?
For a see-through taskbar that reacts to what is on screen, TranslucentTB: it has seven states (desktop, visible window, maximized window, Start, Search, Task View, battery saver) and per-app rules, set from a tray menu. Taskbar Styler's transparent themes, such as TranslucentTaskbar and SimplyTransparent, apply one fixed style. Choose Windhawk when you want to change much more than the background and don't mind editing styles.
What Windhawk and Taskbar Styler are
Windhawk is a free, open-source (GPLv3) platform for "mods" that change how Windows programs behave, made by Ramen Software. Each mod is one C++ source file, built into a DLL that Windhawk loads into the programs the mod targets; Windhawk's README describes a global injection and hooking engine. The latest stable release is 1.7.3 (December 8, 2025); 2.0 alpha builds have been published since July 2026, the latest on October 25, 2026.
Windows 11 Taskbar Styler (version 1.10, by m417z, GPLv3) is a Windhawk mod that loads into explorer.exe and changes properties of the XAML elements the Windows 11 taskbar is built from. You can pick a ready theme in its settings or write your own styles. Transparent-looking themes built into the mod include TranslucentTaskbar and SimplyTransparent; others include DockLike, Squircle, Matter and WinXP.
For example, the TranslucentTaskbar theme (by Undisputed00x) sets the taskbar background to a Windhawk blur brush with a blur amount of 18 and a #25323232 tint, hides the thin border line, and restyles the tray overflow and context menus to match.
Side by side
| Windhawk + Taskbar Styler | TranslucentTB | |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes | Almost any property of any taskbar element: background, border, corner radius, padding, icon size and spacing, button styles, the clock, flyouts | The taskbar background (five accents and a color), the border line and the Aero Peek button |
| Transparency | Through a theme or your own styles, for example a blur brush or a semi-transparent color on the background | Normal, opaque, clear, blur (with strength) and acrylic, in any #RRGGBBAA color |
| Changes with what's on screen | The styles you set apply all the time; the Styler has no equivalent of per-window states | Seven states plus rules by window class, process or title (dynamic modes) |
| Setup | Install Windhawk, install the mod, choose a theme or write styles (YAML-like text with XAML values) | Install one app; change looks from the tray menu or settings.json |
| Windows versions | Taskbar Styler is for the Windows 11 taskbar | Windows 10 (1903+) and Windows 11 |
| How it gets into Explorer | Windhawk's engine injects the mod DLL into explorer.exe and hooks functions | Loads one helper DLL (ExplorerTAP) into Explorer through Windows' XAML Diagnostics interface |
| Other mods | Hundreds of other Windhawk mods, for the Start menu, notification center, Explorer and more | None: it does one thing |
| Price and license | Free; Windhawk and the Styler mod are GPLv3 | Free; GPLv3 |
| Latest release | Windhawk 1.7.3 (Dec 2025), 2.0 alpha.8 (Oct 25, 2026); Taskbar Styler 1.10 | 2026.2 (August 31, 2026) |
What only TranslucentTB does
- Looks that follow your windows. Clear on the desktop, blurred while you work, solid when a window is maximized, Windows' own look while Start is open. Each monitor's taskbar is decided separately.
- Per-app looks. For example a solid dark taskbar only while VS Code is maximized (window rules).
- Windows 10 support. The same app and settings work on the Windows 10 taskbar.
- No styling to learn. Pick a look from the tray menu; our settings builder covers the rest.
clear with #00000000: the taskbar background is gone.

blur with blur_radius 30: shapes become soft.

opaque with #1D4ED820: the alpha (20) is ignored and the bar is solid.

How these were captured
Captured October 29, 2026 on Windows build 26100 in our hands-on test; only cropped and resized. Settings used:
{ "desktop_appearance": { "accent": "clear", "color": "#00000000" } }{ "desktop_appearance": { "accent": "blur", "color": "#00000010", "blur_radius": 30 } }{ "desktop_appearance": { "accent": "opaque", "color": "#1D4ED820" } }What only Windhawk does
- Restyle the taskbar itself: rounded or floating taskbar, icon size, spacing, labels, the clock, the Start button and the flyouts, not just the background.
- Change the rest of Windows: the Start menu and notification center have their own Styler mods, and there are mods for File Explorer and many other programs.
- Share and reuse styles: themes are plain text you can copy from the Taskbar Styling Guide.
Using both: why they clash
TranslucentTB's helper looks for a Rectangle named BackgroundFill inside the taskbar's TaskbarFrame and replaces its fill with its own brush (from ExplorerTAP/visualtreewatcher.cpp in the 2026.2 source). The TranslucentTaskbar theme targets the same element, Rectangle#BackgroundFill, and sets the same property. Two programs write one value, so at best the last one wins and the look flips depending on which reapplied last.
It can be worse than a flip. TranslucentTB users report crashes and the "Failed to initialize XAML Diagnostics" error while Taskbar Styler is active (issue #1195). A hands-on test published by TechOnRamen on October 22, 2026 (Windhawk 1.7.3, Taskbar Styler 1.10, TranslucentTB 2026.2, Windows 11 build 26300.9711) found that TranslucentTB failed to start on all three tries while the Styler ran, and only started after Explorer was restarted. When the Styler was turned back on, its theme took over again.
Safety and trust
Both tools are free, open source and run code inside Explorer, which is why security software sometimes flags either one. The difference is scope:
- TranslucentTB is one app from one team. Its releases are signed (the Store package by Microsoft, the .exe with a Microsoft-verified certificate issued to its lead developer), and its helper loads only into Explorer. Our checks: is TranslucentTB safe?
- Windhawk runs mods written by many community authors. Each mod's source is visible in Windhawk before you install it, and mods are published through the windhawk-mods repository. Newer Windhawk versions download pre-built mods by default instead of compiling the source on your PC, according to coverage of the 1.7 release. You are trusting each mod author as well as Windhawk.
Which should you choose?
TranslucentTB
- You want transparency that changes with maximized windows or Start.
- You use Windows 10, or both Windows 10 and 11.
- You prefer one small app with a tray menu.
Windhawk + Taskbar Styler
- You want a fully custom Windows 11 taskbar, not only a transparent one.
- You already use Windhawk mods.
- You are happy editing styles or picking community themes.
